Smashing Addictions & Distractions: How Elite Leaders Master Their Minds
How sobriety was only my first step to building an amazing life
If you’re a high-level leader, you know how to conquer a boardroom. You know how to crush sales targets.
But tell me this: Can you conquer your own mind?
For years, I believed alcohol was my problem. It was the thing holding me back, the escape button I pressed after every 60-hour week.
Here’s the radical, life-changing truth I eventually discovered after getting sober in 2003:
Alcohol or Drugs Are NOT The Problem.
They are what I was using to cope with the REAL problem, which was my thinking.
Once I started to straighten my thinking out, and started to design the life I was craving, there was no room for alcohol or drugs.
For the elite leader, the cocktail of choice isn’t always a glass of scotch. It can often be subtler, more insidious:
The Corporate “Work-oholism” Habit: You use the endless pursuit of deals and titles to avoid silence, reflection, or fixing your broken marriage.
The Social Media/News Fixation: You scroll endlessly for a hit of validation or crisis-driven urgency to feel “in the loop,” avoiding the real work of defining your own life vision.
The Status Obsession: You buy the bigger house, the faster car, hoping the next purchase will finally fill the void left by a lack of purpose.
These are all elegant, high-performance addictions. They are the same old escape mechanism in a new suit.
You are a master strategist for your business.
It’s time to become a Master Strategist for Your Mind.
The 3-Step Strategy to Break the Cycle
To move from coping with your mind to mastering it, you have to stop fighting the addiction and start dismantling the thinking that feeds it.
Step 1: Unmask Your Real Problem (The Root Cause)
Your brain is a masterful storyteller. It convinces you that you “need” that glass of wine to relax, or that you “must” answer that email at midnight to be a good leader.
Your job is to identify the emotion you are running from. Is it fear of failure? The shame of an unsatisfying relationship? The guilt of sacrificing your health for your career?
Action: Before you reach for the distraction (phone, alcohol, extra project), pause for three seconds and name the feeling you want to numb. By naming it, you strip it of its power.
This is a form of CBT (Cognative Behavioral Therapy). Identifying the harmful behavior and redirecting. Otherwise known as Emotional Regulation.
Step 2: Replace the Escape with the Vision
You can’t create a void; you must fill it. You need a replacement mechanism that is more powerful, more compelling, and more rewarding than the distraction.
This is where the Vision Plan System is critical. If your desired future, living in Spain, spending guilt-free time with your family, launching your own venture, is clear and emotionally vivid, it becomes an irresistible magnet.
Action: Stop thinking of sobriety or focus as deprivation. Start seeing them as fuel for your next chapter. Every time you choose health, clarity, or presence, you are investing in the reality you want to design.
Step 3: Establish Radical Boundaries
The corporate world applauds your lack of boundaries. They call it “dedication.” I call it self-sabotage.
Elite leaders who achieve true freedom are ruthless about protecting their mindset window. This means setting non-negotiable rules around who gets access to your attention and when.
For me, that meant protecting my early morning hours for my own vision (my Exit Vehicle). For you, it might mean:
No email for the first two hours of your day.
A firm 6 PM device shutdown to connect with your partner.
Zero alcohol for 30 days to reset your brain chemistry.
True leadership is not about managing others; it’s about flawlessly managing your own thoughts, habits, and environment. Master your mind, and everything else—your health, your finances, your freedom—will follow.
